Every once in a while Ailz sits on a panel assessing applications from people who want to work with the disabled. She had one yesterday. I sat in the car while she was inside- read my library book, did a crossword and slept. I was woken by an old lady who had been attending a day care centre in the same building and thought I was her drive home.

In the afternoon I defrosted the freezer.

First thing this morning- at seven o'clock or earlier- a delivery van pulled up two doors down. I lay in bed and listened to the delivery men chunnering. When I got up the street was full of furniture- enough to fill a house- very elaborate furniture, stained mahogany brown, with mouldings and gold finials- as if- Ailz said- "it was meant for a palace in Morocco".  I walked round to admire it and our neighbour- very happy and proud- told me it was a present from his brother in Pakistan. Most of it's too bulky to fit through the door- and it won't disassemble because the frames are moulded in one piece- so it looks as if he's going to have to take out one of his windows.

A Britishism- to chunner is to keep up a flow of meaningless conversation.
