Some Wedding Or Other
Apr. 29th, 2011 12:09 pm I watched the bit where they were all turning up to the Abbey: various hereditary monarchs from places like Tonga, Monaco and Lichtenstein, Prince Charles's old girlfriends in scene-stealing hats, Elton John and David Furnish. Formerly I would have stayed to mock, but I'm getting too old to play the urchin; I have my own dignity to consider- so I went and cleaned the toilet instead.
Then I had a shower. Then I clipped the hedge.
They're still at it. I'm back in the room with the TV because that's where the computer is. The archbishop has just blessed the congregation and the choir has gone AAAAaaaaaAAAAaaaagh-men. Now there are trumpets. And now it's the national anthem. Apparently Prince Charles, who likes that sort of thing, has imported a lot of Parry into the service.

Odd wedding- one at which the groom's old dad gets to pick the music.! But I'm starting to do just what I said I wouldn't. Shut up, Grist!

Date: 2011-04-29 02:40 pm (UTC)There was a wild burst of clapping and cheering down the hall a while ago over The Kiss - people here are really eating this up. Royals are expensive pets these days, and I think that some of U.S. are jealous that we don't have any real ones. Just Disneyland, Ren Faires and some wonderfully quixotic French who are building us a genuine 13th century medieval fortress in my home state (which is far more commonly known for its trailer parks).
Personally, I prefer the rabbits. I was still young enough to have a Cinderella costume when Diana was walking the aisle, so I always had a fondness for her and The Boys. But too many of my friends still get trotted out to have to dance for HRM after all these centuries, and I still have some growls of resentment going on after the ceremonial obeisance re-enactments with the Jamestown 400th anniversary a few years back. I'm not feeling the warm fuzzies this time, and will be glad when it all goes back in the box.

I've been poking fun at the royals all my life. I'm getting tired of hearing myself do it. People seem to like them, so who am I to cavil? It's not as if they had any real power.
