Ed Miliband

I don't know much about Ed Miliband. I think he got the job because he wasn't Blair's candidate and he wasn't Brown's candidate. People inside the political arena (MPs, party members) don't seem to appreciate just how much those two gentlemen- and their tribes- are detested in the country at large. Roy Hattersley, in an article published this morning, acknowledges that one of the reasons he backed Ed is that "he looks and sounds like a human being".

I'm relieved that Milliband won - mainly because I've had enough of Blair/Brown stirring things up for a lifetime. (And if Blair really thought Brown was incapable or too unstable to be PM - why agree to hand the job over in a stitch-up that violated party protocol?!)

However, I do have a fair amount of respect for Diane Abbott. Mainly because she's one of the few Labour politicians to still hold "unfashionable" views, and be honest about them.

Diane Abbott would have got my vote too- if I had one.

I agree about the stitch-up. David Miliband should have run for the leadership then- or staged a revolt later. He had his chances and he funked them.

The Radio 4 news today was saying that pundits are expecting him to "lurch to the left". I was so hoping he would say:

"This leader's not for lurching."

If he took the party any further right he might as well resign and join the Coalition.
