Books I've Owned Since I was A Kid. Part 5.

I was ill in bed. I'll guess I was seven. My granny asked me what I'd like as a special present to make me feel better- and I said "A Bible-if possible with a red cover". So she went out and bought me one. I was a serious-minded child.

My Bible has pictures by Arthur Twidle (1865-1936). Twidle was the illustrator of Schoolboy Grit by Gunby Hadath, Junk Ahoy by William Charles Metcalfe, Prefect and Fag and Fags and the King by Charles Mansford- and The Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I'd have to do some hunting to find my Sunday school presentation bible, but these illustrations have a remarkably similar feel to what I remember gazing at. The illustration plates were by far my favorite part.

I have other Bibles, but the one my granny gave me (King James version of course) is always nearest to hand.

My foster mother (ages 7-11) had a children's bible - one that had the proper imprimatur of the catholic censors. It too had wonderful illustrations most of which I liked better than the stories. However, I was fascinated by the story of the twelve(?)Maccabees in which the enemy tried to make them give up their faith by toruturing them so that they suffered terribly before they were put to death. That story somehow appealed to my seven or eight year old sadistic(I guess)self.

I had a book of Bible stories authored by someone called "Uncle Arthur". That had nice illustrations too.

These days books are either picture books- which means pictures all the way through- or they're not illustrated at all. The day of the colour plate is over.
