I think- but I could be wrong- that those shapes are snakes twining around his staff.

That's a wonderful Mercury. With the weathering, he's come out looking like a cross between himself and Pan.

Aargh! Romans! The altar reminds me of my undergraduate labs - we had to draw and translate a Roman carved stone once...
Looks like a lovely museum.

That sounds like hard work.
They spent a lot of money on it earlier this century. They have some fine Saxon material too. I rather rushed through that room because I was running out of time.
