There were a lot of fireworks last night- including some especially bangy ones just after one o'clock. Did I miss some event of national or international significance?  Did Pakistan win gold at the Winter Olympics or something?

I felt really miserable yesterday- seriously on the verge of tears.  I don't know why.  It can't have been anything deep-seated because I feel much cheerier today, even though, see above, I didn't sleep well.

We're going on holiday soon-  to France- with Ruth- to visit Matthew at CERN.  Ailz has packed the bags, and there's nothing much left for me to do but count down the hours and make some chocolate fridge cake (my current speciality) to eat on the train.

Definitely the Chinese New Year. I'll be spending all day today in Chinatown myself, watching the street shows and dodging firecrackers, then to a restaurant for a Chinese feed.
The Chinese do what the Germans do at their New Year -- make lots of noise to drive away evil spirits. We do a bit of that too, with our First Night fireworks displays.
France! You are so fortunate! Have a lovely trip, and Happy Valentine's Day to you and Ailz.

Thanks. We'll be staying up on the Swiss border- near Annecy.
