Ailz put the shout out for an electrician on Freecycle- and Steve's wife recommended Steve. He's a middle-aged bloke with a beard- and we liked him so much we felt easy about leaving him in the cellar- still fiddling with fuses- while we went off to the Trafford Centre to meet Alice. He didn't understand our problem any more than any of the other electricians have done, but he worked round it - and now all the lights come on. For this- about an hour's work- he charged us £20- much less than I was expecting.

The step-lift has been fixed too- until the next time it breaks down.

It's good to get these things fixed before winter really clamps down.

We know a handyman who we trust implicitly in our home. He and his wife have done all sorts of odd jobs for us and as he is also an expert bricklayer, some remodeling. I find it comforting to have someone that reliable and trustworthy...and who charges us less also.

Carl is our regular handyman- and a good friend- but his knowledge of electrics only stretches so far.

That guy sounds like our old auto mechanic, who did the job and charged next to nothing, compared to hundreds of dollars for licensed mechanics. Jake kept our old wrecks running sweetly for years, so we had no car payments on vehicles we bought from junkyards for $500 or so. We went many miles in the old cars before they finally said "Amen" and passed quietly away. God bless you, Jake, and all others like you (including Steve) wherever you are today!

I am so happy that you have found someone handy to take care of electrical issues, and doubly glad for the working step-lift.

There are lots of good, ethical workmen out there- it's just a case of finding them.
