Bonfire night was singularly quiet. I blame the recession, or thank the recession....whatever. I suppose it's still possible there'll be an eruption of fireworks over the weekend.

Yesterday I made a carrot cake.

Lucky you! We were bombarded for hours, from the moment it got dark until quite late. It doesn't help when both local supermarkets are selling fireworks as a 'buy one get one free' deal!

Pyromaniacs need no encouragement here, thanks very much! They are already dab hands at car bonfires. :-(

I have no objection to organised displays, but would love to see private sales banned. If they only set the things off on the designated night it wouldn't be so bad, but I guarantee we will have another night of bangs and flashes tonight, and again tomorrow, and a few isolated ones on Sunday. It happens every year, and on a housing estate it means you can't escape it.

I don't want to stop the fun, just limit the spread of the nuisance factor.

Poor you!

Round here bonfire night seems to dying away. You no longer get kids hawking guys around- and every year there seem to be fewer and fewer fireworks.

Yes, I glimpsed an article in the Metro over someone's shoulder on the bus this morning, claiming that people are shifting their interest to Halloween instead. But for all that, things seemed pretty busy and noisy last night in Leeds, what with bonfires in the park and fireworks going off all over the place. I'm sure it makes quite a difference what night of the week these things fall on - so Halloween may well have been bigger this year thanks to being on a Saturday, but it wouldn't surprise me if that is reversed next time Bonfire Night falls on a Saturday instead.

I think the seeming decline round here may have a lot to do with the growing number of Asian families- who can't be expected to care very much about Guy Fawkes one way or the other.

We watched V for Vendetta last night.

Yes he does...but V, sadly, went to his funeral pyre on that subway train.
