1. Carl is up a ladder, spraying poison at the moss that lives on the kitchen wall. (Sorry, moss). He leans down to tell me that the pointing is shot . He runs his finger along a seam. "It comes away," he says. "Just like sand. It shouldn't do that."

2. Odi and Azi came to tea- plus babies. I give them home-made mince pies.

3.  For tea I make potato bhajis and the tomato chutney to dip them in.

OOOOOoooOOOoo potato bhajis and tomato chutney dip sounds absolutely scrummy ... do you have a recipe for them??

The recipes are from Shezad Husain's Easy Indian Cookery

Alloo Bhajias.

Ingredients: 4 oz gram flour, 1 tsp white cumin seeds, 1 tsp crushed red chilies, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp bicarb, 1 1/2 tsps pomegranate powder, 1 fresh green chili, chopped, 1 fresh red chili chopped, 1 tbs fresh chopped coriander, water to mix, oil, potatoes cut into thin slices.

1. Sift flour into large bowl. Add other spices etc, add water to make thin batter.
2. Heat oil in deep frying pan. Dip potato slices in batter and fry, turning once. Drain on kitchen towel.

Tomato Chutney

Ingredients; 8 tomatoes, diced, 1 1/2 tsp ground coriander, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp fresh ginger pulp, 1 tsp fresh garlic pulp, 1 tsp chil powder, 1/8 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp salt, 3 tbs corn oil, 4-6 curry leaves, 1/4 tsp white cumin seeds, 1/4 tsp onion seeds, 3 whole dried red chilies (optional), 1 onion, sliced, 2 tbs lemon juice, 1 tbs chopped fresh coriander.

1 Place tomatoes in bowl with ground corinader, cumin, ginger, garlic, chili powder, turmeric and salt.

2 Heat oil in sacepan. Add curry leaves, white cumin seeds, onion seeds, red chilies and onion and fry for 1 minute. Add tomato mixture and stir fry on medium heat for 3-5 minutes.

3 Pour in lemon juice and fresh corinader and stir-fry for 5 minutes.

I didn't follow the recipe exactly. I left out one or two ingredients because I didn't have them and made certain substitutions. For instance I used wheat flour instead of gram flour. I doubt if these small changes made much difference to the outcome.
