So the attack on LJ- and Facebook, Twitter, Blogger and YouTube-  turns out to have been an attempt to silence one man- the Georgian nationalist Cyxymu, who now- thanks to this smart move by his enemies- is famous not only in his own region, but across the entire world.

Funny how that "works", seeing as how I never heard of him before this all happened. :-) I wonder what on earth he was saying that his detractors don't like.

Fortunately, for us the bad guys are (usually) stupider than the good guys.
It never eases to amaze me, and living up here with that bunch of loonies for neighbours, I have had plenty of experience, how ineffectual Russian attempts at cyber-terrorism turn out to be.

All I think this will do is accelerate the fencing off of the Internet. People will be isolated in their own 'regions', and whole domains will be cut off. LJ's servers are in RU. That bothers me, which is why I've gone ahead and backed up my journal to Dreamwidth. If LJ goes under, or gets fenced out, we won't be left in the lurch.

I predict that this action will be called the "Georgian" attack, and will become common soon. It's the same action that overwhelms email accounts, I think, and isn't that hard (if you have some computer skill) to do. I'm pretty sure there are young hackers sitting around their new laptops right now trying to figure out how to crash websites instead of doing their homework.
