Today I have been convalescent.

In the morning I wrote several LJ posts and then deleted them because they were boring

In the afternoon I struggled with one of  the Daily Telegraph's cryptic crosswords.

My mother rang. She had had a man visit her from the Birmingham Art Gallery to ask her about the painter Joseph Southall, who is a distant relative of ours. The Gallery is gearing up to a retrospective exhibition of his work in 2012.

Ailz wanted sausages for tea. I found a recipe that involved adding onions and apples to the pan and then stewing everything in a sauce made of chicken stock, red currant jelly (I didn't have any, so used bramble jelly instead) and wholegrain mustard.

Contentment by Joseph Southall (1861-1944)

I'm glad that you are on the mend.
It's good to see an elegant older lady in that painting. The cat looks huge!

Thanks.

The lady was Uncle Joe's wife- and first cousin- so also a distant blood relative of ours.

sorry to hear you are still poorly. Ma told me this evening. I hope you feel better soon. Congrats to Ailz - I saw the photo of her with the certificate. I hear Ailz is feeling better now, which is good.
Looking forward to seeing you both soon. Not long now till the wedding.
By the way, did you get the book safely?

Love
jenny

Thanks. Yes, I've had two different thingies one after another. I'm still feeling pretty washed out.

The book arrived safe and sound. Thanks. I left an earlier note thanking Ian on his Nashey LJ.

love,

T

The tea was very nice. I suppose you could call the sauce bitter-sweet. Whatever. I'd certainly do it again.

Apparently people die of sleep apnea. Clearly your mother doesn't want you joining her quite yet.

Congratulations to Amy!

I'm glad to hear that you are convalescing.
I do something with apples and onions, etc. on pork chops, very similar to what you have described for the sausages. Now I shall have to try it on the sausages as well. I use the green granny smith apples, and the strong yellow onions, and my sauce is like yours, except I use raspberry jelly. Hmmm, now I am hungry for pork chops!

The recipe specified red apples, but I don't see what difference it makes. As for the jelly, I think any kind would do. The ingredient I forgot to mention was the rosemary.

That sounds extremely tasty, and I expect I could use that lingonberry jam from IKEA. Hmm!
