Hooked

That was Low Sunday. Not many came to church. After the service I picked dandelions. I gave the flowers to Ourdert and the leaves to the rabbits.

And I befriended a young man who turned out to have a rather ticklish problem. We brought him home and I found myself ringing round, trying to find him the specialised help he needs. I got somewhere, I think- but the story isn't over yet..

I still struggle against being pulled into church life, but the more I struggle the further the hook goes in. As Ailz points out, I was carrying on yesterday- in taking the young man under my wing- as if I were the bloody vicar.

I think it's wonderful that you're helping. More people should be willing to reach out and help someone if they see they are in trouble. I've always done that - frankly, sometimes when someone gets into difficulties, they're no longer able to think clearly, and they need someone who can sit down and say "OK, here's what we're going to do" and work up a plan for them.

The guy has been to church two or three times- on his own-and I thought it was time someone spoke to him. I didn't have a clue what I was getting into :)

You can't override divine will, so I would just go with the flow :)

Who knows what will happen...?

All along I've felt there's been someone/something nudging me.

Isnt that what the Christian church is about? Helping? You dont have to be a vicar (or even a church member) to help "one of the least of these". Good for you, Tony!

I should have added that good works are not the exclusive province of religion, either.

The thing about the church is that helping people is a big part of its charter, its mission statement or whatever. If it doesn't help it's not doing the job it was set up to do

Good of you to help him, though -- people are doing that less and less these days.

Maybe the recession will help us get back into the habit.

I hope you're right.

Or just a good person.

It feels to me like I was acting on (whispered) orders.

The people are the church. You don't have to accept or take a title. When you help him, it helps you. (And I mean spritually, not for personal gain of some kind.) I don't understand why we all want to struggle against it, but we do. Thank goodness for people (like you) who are willing to help. It is the right thing to do.

Thanks.

It seems to me that the church is a community or nothing- and people in a community help one another.

I remember your writing about being very young and jumping up and down on your bed for joy, knowing you loved God. I loved that story. That is who you are, the "bloody vicar"...

I'd forgotten I'd written about that. I guess that shows just how long I've been on LJ.

Yes, there's no escaping one's karma.....
