Baby Care

We looked after the baby for four hours yesterday.  In the course of those four hours we fed him twice (once successfully) put him to bed twice and changed his nappy once.  Also we dandled him, talked rubbish to him and sang him silly songs- oh, and watched some ghastly, shrieky, hyperactive C Beebies show about chuffer trains and cheeky monkies.

It must be twenty five years since I was last  in charge of a baby,  but you never lose the knack.

What a mercy we forget our baby days!  It must be a horrid life.  I imagine the reason they cry on waking is because they're devastated to find it wasn't all a dream and they're still trapped in a helpless, disobedient body with a brain that's only partly tuned in. "Oh shit, I've still got months more of this- Gaaaaaaah!"

I've often thought it must be incredibly boring to be a baby - like one of those dreams where you can't move, and you struggle to wake up because it's so dull.

Exactly.

I was reading how we're born half-baked because if our infant heads were big enough to contain our fully-developed brains they wouldn't fit in the birth canal.

And you gotta empathise with toddlers. So much to get off their chests, so few words to express themselves. No wonder they lose it at the supermarket

On the other hand they're finally able to get around under their own steam- and there's this wonderful, new world for them to explore.

I just think they are busy concentrating on learning. I see them as much more focused than you do, I guess. I think being a baby is a very exciting time, because everything is new to you.

It would be nice to think they enjoyed the process- and I suppose they do in bursts. There are few things more rewarding than getting a baby to laugh!

Most babies, thankfully, don't have the brains yet to know what they don't have, I think. Not so our Finn, though. He acts precisely like someone who has been in a traumatic accident and is rehabilitating.
Those toddler years are pretty universally rough, though.

Believing, as I do, in reincarnation, I think babies often carry a lot of memories into the world with them.
