Holy, Holy, Holy

Whenever we hear the word "holy" these days- holy city, holy mosque, holy man- it seems to be in the context of people being killed.

I fear you are correct.

It is very sad and telling.

I wonder what we mean by the word "holy". Does it have any content at all?

Perhaps we should stop using the word "holy" and substitute something neutral like "religiously significant". Why do we have to play along with the language of religious fanaticism?

You guys are not taking this seriously! (frowns and stamps foot and goes off into a corner to sulk)

OK, seriously, I agree with you, although I wouldn't denigrate holiness because of this. After all, things are "holy" if they are beyond reason, and it is in the realm of passion where people can do great harm ... or create things of great beauty.
