Ruth was adamant that being in the West Country she needed to eat a cream tea in front of a roaring open fire. She got the roaring, open fire in Glastonbury- where were had lunch in the front parlour of the famous medieval inn- the George and Pilgrims- and she got her scone with cream and jam in Wells, where we had afternoon tea in the cathedral restaurant.

Wells is gorgeous- England's smallest cathedral city- and one of the prettiest. We visited all the charity shops- and Ailz bought a toy rat with buck teeth and dredlocks who plays rock music when you squeeze his tummy.
We listened to the inaurguration on the car radio as we drove north along country roads to Bristol.

toy rat were in the foreground somehow
it might be even more wonderful although
the scales of things might not fit well
enough.
when I spent a week in glastonbury I took
a day trip to wells and thought the
cathedral did not look as well as the one
in glastonbury which existed only as an
outline of itself on the sward but completed
itself in the imagination. valid though that
may be as a thought it certainly looks fine
in this picture.
I did not like the inside of it much as I recall
but perhaps that too was just the mood of seeing a thing
once and looking for something other rather than
appreciating what is there.

Glastonbury Abbey is a huge loss, of course. Though what's left makes a wonderfully evocative ruin.
