Husthwaite

Driving south, we spotted a road sign pointing to a 12th century church. Ailz wanted a coffee break and I wanted Romanesque arches so Ruth made the turning and we ended up in the village of Husthwaite- which is Saxon for "house in a clearing".

The pub was friendly and there was a grand view from the churchyard of the Kilburn white horse- the most northerly of such hill figures. It isn't an ancient tribal totem. It was created in 1857.

Once again, I'm floored by the history of it all. That church was built before the Black Death, for crying out loud. It must be a consequence of my nationality that history before the 18th century is always something of an abstract to me. Hell, I was impressed walking around a Colonial-era graveyard in the heart of Boston - the weight of history in Britain and continental Europe would probably leave me dumbstruck. And yet you walk through it in your travels at will.

What's odd it that something like this seems to have more of an impact on me than pre-historic artifacts, or Egyptian/Greek/Roman art and architecture. Go figure.

I never take it for granted. It's one of my gripes about this town that it's a creation of the industrial revolution and there's very little above ground that's earlier than the 19th century- though we do have a Roman road running accross the end of our street.

Phoenix, Arizona would amaze you. I think city planners here consider any building built before 1960 an historical landmark.
