[personal profile] baritonejeff asks about portraits of George Sand. As far as I know Nadar's is the only photograph. But I went to Wikipedia Commons to see what they had and found this image of the younger George (who was famous for cross-dressing) looking absolutely stunning in a top hat.

It makes me want to read her novels.

Four months out of Music Conservatory, I adopted a (Toy Spitz) dog and named HER "George" after George Sand. I was really INTO Chopin, George Sand, etc. and had collected a number of biographical books during my last year of school. Because most of my friends were confused by the "little girl's" name (and remained totally clueless, even after my edifying attempts), I finally began calling her "Georgie" by default.

Have you read any of her work? I'm sort of curious to know what it's like.

Sorry, I haven't read any of her works. Instead, I read parts of: George Sand - A Biography by Curtis Cate (Copyright 1975) published by Houghton Mifflin Company (Boston). By "parts of" ... I concentrated on the chapters [Part 6] dedicated to "The Years with Chopin."

I suspect her novels are dated/unreadable.

If so, it's a pity. She's such an interesting figure.

A dear, now departed, friend of mine had a truly nasty little Pomerian named "Gesualdo", after the renaissance composer. When he would tell people Gesualdo's name, they thought he said "Just Waldo." They would then promptly say "Hi Waldo!"
