Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones is having his autobiography serialised in the Mail.

(No, I don't buy the Mail. My in-laws do and they give us their old copies to line the rabbits' litter trays)

Ron is a bad boy. He and George Harrison (no, not my saintly George!) did a bit of wife swapping back in the day, Keith Richards drew a derringer on Ron, so he drew his Magnum, the whole pack of them were gobbling down Class A drugs like there was no tomorrow.

And it builds the legend. This is what rockers do.

But if a little girl like Britney tries to live like a Rolling Stone- phew- the moralising, the long lenses, the lip-licking disapproval.

I'm not saying I like it how Britney is living her life- or Kate Moss or Amy Winehouse. All I'm saying is- equality of censure.

Wood's a pretty good guitarist, and he did some excellent work with the Faces. Part of the public's fascination with Spears stems from the fact that in contrast with the aggressive, egocentric behavior typically expected of rock stars (including female ones like Janis Joplin), her behavior seems like that of someone truly going to pieces in public, rather than simply living it up in the usual sex/drugs/rock'n'roll/violence manner. People get off on the idea of her helplessness, and they don't feel guilty about it because of her lack of real achievement. Having acquiesced in making her a star, the public turns upon her in revenge for its own lack of taste.

One of these days the media pursuit of a hapless celeb is going to end with someone getting seriously hurt. I don't think the paparazzi killed Di, but it wasn't for want of trying.
