I've always loved this painting. It is an astounding combination of stiff awkwardness (the angel over the shepherds is almost like Flemish clip art, the Child like a doll) and absolutely charming detail, all bathed in an almost clinical, yet magical, light.
It's a strange combination of naivete and sophistication.
I was reading up about the artist: there's not much known about him and only a handful of paintings that can be attributed to him- and he's believd to have died in his late 20s.
