Those old Whovian monsters- Daleks and Cybermen: they never scared me.

And they don't scare me in their new shined up editions.

I've been watching re-runs. The Girl in the Fireplace is a perfect little work of art. But I couldn't be bothered to watch the Cybermen story that follows. It's not just Cybermen, its an alternative universe and it's Rose's freaking dad. These are a few of my least favourite things.

I think I've worked out why Season 1 was better than Season 2. It's not that Eccleston was better than Tennant, it's that Eccleston had a better character arc- from little lost boy to happily married man who dies to save his love.  Tennant's story arc is just  teens in space, jumping from adventure to adventure to adventure.

daleks, and i guess cybermen too, used to scare the crap out of me in the sylvester mccoy days. i well remember ace with her catapult firing gold slugs into cybermen's chests.

and daleks. the ultimate.

they just seem a bit pathetic now, though. all of them. as machines, they aren't that impressive anymore. plus they always get beaten so easily. it's the difference between the agents in matrix 1, and the agents in matrices 2 and 3. in matrix 1, our guys ALWAYS run from agents. but after neo kills one, it starts to seem like no big deal. so in 2 and 3 there's no real bad guy to be afraid of. no menace.

and same with dr. who. after they made that one dalek kill itself, all in one episode, it felt very much like- well, that wasn't very hard. what's next? then- give us daleks AGAIN, and i'm like- do we have to do this AGAIN?

probably everything was too neat, and easy. each episode over and done, and done.

didn't bother watching the ecclestone ones much. he died for his love? will havr to check wikipedia for the storylines...

Eccleston was brilliant. Check out the episodes the Empty child and the Doctor Dances. Those, in my humble submission, are the best Dr Who stories- ever.

I guess "ever" is a bit strong, but I've been following the Doctor since the 60s - and I don't remember anything in the good old days that was quite so witty, moving and downright scary.

I go back WAY further than you, obviously. The Daleks have ALWAYS scared me, the cybermen not so much. The Daleks and Davross, back in the Tom Baker days, were what I though were REALLY frightening.

(Tom Baker remains my favorite Doc, but I haven't seen anyone past Sylvester McCoy. Alas, I have no way to watch them!)

no way to watch them? you know you can download them (illegally) right? and though i say illegal, no-ones gonna stop you.

unless you're in like africa- using a net cafe to make these blog posts. even then though- you could get your own computer and your own line, and download them.

so, no excuses! ;)

do you know anything about peer to peer networks? kazaa was big in the news recently for distributing stuff illegally. but not individuals, you'd be alright.

i use bittorrent stuff. go look at wikipedia.org to get the lowdown on that. then there's a variety of tracking sites, like mininova.org and others.
