Imagine There's No Countries

"It's a big day for sport," says Ailz. This translates as, "There's an English football team playing a match in Germany and a Scottish guy playing a match at Wimbledon". I plan to do my best not to get suckered into watching either of them. 

Because, really, I don't care whether the home side wins or loses. This is especially true in the case of the Scottish guy , who is one of those raw-boned, shock-headed Scots who gets his sense of identity out of rubbishing everything English. I understand why the Scots might hate the English, but my magnanimity falls short of finding it endearing.

But then I don't find fat  young men with red crosses painted on their faces endearing either. I'm backing France to win the World Cup (but not with any great enthusiasm after watching Thierry Henri take a dive against Spain the other day) and that nice Swiss Bloke in the cream coloured jacket to win Wimbledon.

I have to confess that I'm going to root for England this year. They never make it past this round. I'm sick of the French.

If England does beat Portugal I suppose I might get just the tiniest bit excited....

Sentimental favorite is Andre Agassi (for me!). I've watched him play since he turned pro, watched him go from a whiny brat to a dignified man, from someone who could do *it* with little or no effort to someone who is in amazing condition. He went from being a tennis 'matinee idol' to being a somewhat dignified married man and father. One of the most exciting Wimbledon finishes was the year he won. He's the old man now, playing Rafael Nadal (who hardly looks old enough to SHAVE, for God's sake.)

I'm afraid it would take Divine Intervention for him to win Wimbledon this year, but he has announced this will be his last.

He's MY sentimental favorite.

I've just watched the first few games of that match. Nadal looks silly- in his baggy shorts and bandana and his pumped up biceps, so, yes, I'm rooting for Agassi too. I don't think he's got a prayer of winning the tournament, but what a fabulously famous victory if he did!

I think young Mr. Nadal is rather cute. I watched him in a marathon match last year - he played a very rude Frenchman (Grosjean, maybe) and the crowd was all against him. He lost - that match went on forEVER. But he showed more class in losing than his opponent ever showed in winning. He's quite mature, considering all.

But Andre has my heart. I'm caught between wanting him to win and not wanting him to get as far as the finals only to lose - to that nice young man from Switzerland..

I'm happy now le Tour has started. With Amstrong finally hanging up his pedals, it's going to be an interesting race for the first time in years.

Speaking of Spain, I'm sure you heard about Ulrich and Bosso being banned from the Tour de France due to the big doping scandal they were apparently involved in.
