At The Meeting House
Apr. 5th, 2024 10:18 am I think it was last Thursday- maybe the week before- that a woman dropped by the Meeting House shortly before I shut it up for the day. She sat in the Meeting Room for the a couple of minutes then left. She didn't want to talk- and why should she?
Other people do want to talk, or have a cup of coffee or eat lunch or borrow books or just pass the time of day...
The Meeting House is sacred space. It should have a warden (as it once did) and be open every day- so people and the wind can blow through....
We had a letter delivered yesterday to inform us that the building next door to the Meeting House- which used to be a club for RAF vets- is going to be developed as a block of flats. The two buildings were put up at the same time in the same style and nestle up against one another. We have 24 days to raise issues. Ailz and I (both on the Premises Committee) have talked it over and the only thing we can come up with is we'd like the developers to put good soundproofing on the wall that abuts the Meeting Room.
The development will reconfigure the facade. Cladding. New windows and doors. The Rafa Club and the Meeting House date from just after the Second World- the very worst and dreariest period of British architecture. It would be nice if we could get a refit too....
