No- I don't hate futbol; I'm just not terribly interested.

I've never understood the passion it inspires. Why this game and not carpet bowls or octopush?

All those politicians and celebrities banging on about the beautiful game- do they really mean it, or are they just trying to curry favour?

Yes, we won  in '66. That's 40 years ago now. Can we talk about something else?

So many flags! Flags worry me.

The  police predict an up-surge in domestic violence.  Beckham misses a penalty and a thousand oiks reach over and smack the wife.

Maybe I do hate it, after all.

Some scientist just calculated that people flying football flags from their cars reduces engine efficiency and so, on top of everything else, the World Cup is going to cause a huge increase in CO2 emissions.

Ah but there's a high school here that I attended for 3 years before leaving out of hate. For the football games, people put oversized confederate flags on their trucks. Flags that used to be a symbol of racism.

the business about sports encouraging domestic violence is, at least in the US, pretty well established as an unfounded urban legend. i imagine it's similar in the UK. check it out at snopes

which isn't to say i like soccer, though-- an hour-long game where only one point, maybe two, three tops, is ever scored? how boring! i feel similarly about hockey, too.

Exactly.

A bunch of men running up and down a field for an hour and a half- dull, dull, dull!

Oh, right...

The police spokesman was talking about having "statistics", but I suppose he may have been using the word rather loosely.
