The pigeons who hang out on our roof declined in number over the winter (not surprising, I suppose) but are now back in full strength. This morning, when they were sitting still, I counted 17.
I buy wild bird seed by the sack. I give the pigeons breakfast; later, if I'm not off doing something else, I give them a second breakfast. Sometimes I give them afternoon tea as well.
I'm not just feeding pigeons, of course, there are jackdaws as well- and sometimes the gulls come and see what all the fuss is about. We don't get many small birds. The situation is too exposed for them, I think. That may change- I hope it does- when the shrubs and bushes we've planted grow to full size.
There's a church in the town centre with a big wooden cross planted in its garden. The upper surface of the cross bar bristles with those funny little spikes people put on things to stop birds alighting. I wonder what St Francis would have said....
