Our Furry Friends

poliphilo1.Something killed one of the pigeons I feed- and left it lying in a corner of the garden. It was a white pigeon. So pretty. I buried the body but there is still a carpeting of white feathers to show where it died.
The suspects are:
a. The fox. But wouldn't a fox have eaten as well as killed? Or if it hadn't eaten on the spot taken the body away to eat at leisure?
b. Marlowe: Most unlikely. He has never caught anything bigger than a field vole. And if he had caught a pigeon he'd almost certainly have brought it into the house to delight us all.
c. One of the other neighbourhood cats. There's a particularly fluffy one that has a home but tells you that it doesn't and can it please come inside and be fed. Marlowe despises it. I'd not be at all surprised if it turned out to be a psycho-killer.
2. Our neighbours are acquiring dogs. There was one that showed up some time before Christmas. We listened to its owner shouting it, but couldn't hear clearly and came to the conclusion it was called "Pudding". Highly original, we thought. I was disappointed when I discovered that it was actually called "Woody".
Another showed up a few days back. Once again we listened carefully to its owner shouting it. I can't be entirely sure but this one seems to be called "Car Park."
