My grandparents retired to the Sussex coast just as I have done- first to a bungalow in Rottingdean and then to an apartment in Hove. Those places are a little further west of here- on either side of Brighton, but the light is the same, the air is the same- and as I walked down the garden path this morning I was getting flashbacks.
Also the wind is the same- less noisy than the wind in the Weald where there are trees to be messed about with, so less alarming- but just as strong if not stronger. It tosses things about. We left the cat box on the patio (I know, I know, but there's no room for it indoors right now) and this morning I found it lying against the fence.
Jordan has died- the punk icon and associate of Derek Jarman. She was a brave person who made herself look extraordinary- and people were afraid of her. I remember being intimidated by punks myself back in the 80s because anything unfamiliar triggers the flight or fight responses we carry with us from the wide and parched savannah- and makes us go, "Not normal therefore dangerous". In fact the young persons behind the regalia were probably shy- as Jordan said she was- and cringing inside even as they made others cringe. According to the obits, Jordan claimed that in the end "normality saved her". She became a veterinary nurse and went to live in Seaford- the quiet little seaside town on the far side of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters- between here and the places where my grandparents ended up.
