Still A Bit Blowy

Storm Franklin followed Dudley and Eunice, but compared to them he was a pussycat. It's still windy but I don't think what's going on outside at the moment is distinctive enough to have been given a name.

I burned candles during the two blackouts- and they gave me the sniffles. Ailz says it's hardly surprising because most candles are petroleum based and full of chemicals. Gah! I used not to have allergies- now I seem to be snivelling all the time.

The Queen and her immediate heir (both of them vulnerable old people) have come down with Covid and nobody is panicking. Covid has morphed- in the course of a couple of years- from terrifying plague on a level with the Black Death to something more like the common cold but less debilitating. I should like to hang around long enough to have this thoroughly explained to me....

My guess from afar is that the queen was totally vaccinated. My mother was totally vaxxed last summer when one of her caregivers (also vaxxed) brought Delta into the house. Both quite ill at the time, both still going. I only watched the first episode of "The Crown," but felt that one of its main points was the queen's strong anti-smoking feelings. I think that has stood her in good stead and she probably doesn't have much in the way of pre-existing heart or lung conditions. My hope is that she makes it to 75 years in office and then people decide to declare that their monarch outlived everybody's monarch in a we're #1, can't be beaten way, and shut the whole system down.

Respect for the Queen appears to be what keeps the monarchy afloat. Once she's gone her heirs are going to have to do a lot of bailing to stop the institution from sinking.

Not having watched The Crown, I would presume the Queen's view on smoking would be down to her father's lung cancer.

Elderly head of state "suffering from a slight cold" is not a good headline for those of us old enough to remember Brezhnev and his successors. poliphilo is right that a good chunk of the Queen's popularity is personal, and things will have to change when the time comes for her successor to take over.
