I finished War and Peace.

And I'm left marvelling at how Tolstoy- who was in his late thirties when he wrote it- came to know so much- about psychology, spirituality, family dynamics, warfare, you name it. I guess he was just one of those rare people- like Shakespeare, Leonardo, Einstein- who seem to have been born with a more capacious spirit/mind/ brain than the rest of us.

Now I need to get back to my read through of Dickens, but I've already packed the Collected Works- and I refuse to unpack until we get to the new house- so Dombey and Son can wait. Instead I'll be picking up Mary Renault's The Mask of Apollo- which I bought at the same time as the Collected Dickens at the back end of last year.

And then there's Alan Garner's Treacle Walker, which I bought as soon as it was published and have been saving up as a treat- but it's really no more than a short story so I'll probably finish it at a sitting.

Or then the spirits of the ages were whispering secrets into his ears as he wrote. :)
