Norma Waterson RIP

After the news of her death came in I played a couple of tracks- one from the beginning of her career when she was singing with her brother and sister and one from near the end when she was singing with her daughter- and then Ailz went upstairs and sat on the bed and played CD after CD. Hearing all that great music in the distance and knowing that there won't be any more was a little painful. Last track Ailz played was Shallow Brown. No-one really knows what that song is supposed to be about except that it carries a huge weight of suffering and is quite extraordinarily beautiful...

Well, maybe. It exists in so many different versions that the original is unrecoverable.
