Only weak people aren't harmless. They're prone to doing destructive things to give themselves the illusion of power. Shooters are in a continuum that includes the folk who sneak round killing cats, the writers of poison pen letters, internet trolls, bosses who sexually assault their employees and politicians who take their countries into war...

I'm sure you're right about the second half of this, but I suspect that there's an element of box-ticking in the police thinking: 'He was sent on an anger management course, he has completed an anger management course...' (and he might sue us if we don't return his gun). I look forward to hearing from the people who run that course.

Edited on Sunday morning to say that I owe you an apology: it looks as if someone imagined the 'anger management' thing. I don't *think* it was me. But it has vanished from the news reports as if it had never existed...
