Worzel Gummidge
Dec. 23rd, 2020 10:18 amIt bothered me a little that all the scarecrows are said to have been made by the Green Man- and yet have memories (which they sentimentally indulge) of their mothers- but, then- as Worzel says to Susan when she asks him how he can eat food when he doesn't have any insides- "I shouldn't worry too much about that. You'll find a lot of things don't add up."
And, really, why should they?
I was a little grudging about Worzel Gummidge in my last but one post- but it's got a hold over me- and the more I think about it the more I'm realising it's totally wonderful...
I have vivid memories of the scarecrow maker in the Jon Pertwee series- there called the Crowman and played by Geoffrey Bayldon (who specialised in wizards)- and this, to begin with, overshadowed my appreciation of Michael Palin's turn as the same character- now called The Green Man. (I understand that in the books he doesn't have a name at all.)
Bayldon was sharp, angular and sinister; Palin is gentle, kindly and more than a little hazy. And, again, why not? It makes sense for the god of the scarecrows to be a bit of a bodger- the well-meaning creator of an imperfect creation...
Jon Pertwee's Worzel was a saucy rogue, Crook's doesn't have a bad stick in his body.
