Hiccoughs

As it drew towards the end of its time the scented candle started sending out great hiccoughs of flame- and set off the smoke alarm.

The rats were quiet last night. The deterrents we've put in place must be working.

Barbara Windsor died a few days ago. John le Carre's death was reported this morning. A guy called Basualdo who used to pimp girls for Prince Charles has died too. The second half of the 20th century becomes less and less accessible, less and less comprehensible, less and less relatable....

I dreamed of a cathedral made entirely of stained glass. Most of the glass had been stripped out- for cleaning or restoration, leaving behind a complicated metal framework. If we moved into the house across the way- which we were thinking of doing- we would be able to watch as it was put back together again.

Babs Windsor was a little personal for me as she'd become a friend during my time living in London.

I read what you wrote about her. No-one, it seems, has a bad word to say.

That makes me feel old! But, as each year -- and each significant person from that time -- passes, it becomes more true.

Your dream makes me think of the restoration project on the U.S. Air Force Academy chapel; a temporary outer structure has just been constructed around and over it, prior to removing all the aluminum panels and stained glass for a thorough rehabilitation. The bare supporting framework will stand for a couple of years, sadly hidden by the temp structure.

The further we move away from the late 20th century the more bizarre it seems. I think we'll come to view it as an age of transition.
