The right to say things that religious people object to is precious and non-negotiable. Even so, I wish those damn cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed had a little more artistic merit.
In my view, freedom of speech includes the right to criticise, to ridicule, to caricature, to blaspheme and to insult. Based on the current cultural climate (where christians and sikhs have proved every bit as fascistic on these issues as their muslim counterparts) and recent regulations it seems very doubtful that figures like Voltaire and Nietzsche would have beenb able to write.
