You can no longer just go to the pub.

It's now something you have to plan in advance. Local rules may vary but the pub they were showing us on the news last night expects you to ring ahead and book a table and a time slot. No-one is allowed to stay for more than three hours.

If you make it through the door you'll be obliged to give the management your name and contact details.

You'll then be shown to a table- and expected to stay put. It's unlikely you'll be allowed to go up to the bar. You certainly won't be permitted to stand at it. 

Am I so desperate for beer that I'm prepared to deal with all these restrictions?

If that's the report I saw, Newcastle, and I didn't recognise the pub.

People may be less desperate for beer than they are to consume their beer in congenial surroundings in the presence of others. Yes, I admit, what is on offer is a pale reflection of that. But if the regular event of your social life is Saturday night at the pub, you might put up with quite a bit to reclaim some semblance of a social life.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you: me neither!

I drank silly amounts of beer when I was student- but that was the only period of my life when I was a regular pub-goer- and even then it was a matter of fitting in with the culture rather than actually having fun.
