A Long Drive

I suppose that if you actually live in London you relate to your own little, villagey part of it and find it cozy and characterful enough- because Highgate and Edmonton and Islington were once little villages with clear green countryside between them and still reveal their individuality to those who love them- but if you're an outsider and driving across it in the dark it seems to be one enormous, homogenous thing that goes on forever...

After London it was raining hard, and the wind was getting stronger and stronger and there was quite a stretch of our route- after Tunbridge Wells- that had to be done on haphazardly-lit country roads. It was all quite exciting.

I was thinking of calling this post "Midnight Drive"- but of course it wasn't anywhere near midnight but rather late afternoon in December- and we were home by six o'clock....

Ignorance Is Bliss

One of the good things about not reading the newspapers is that a number of perennial irritants no longer exist in my world.

For instance I no longer have any idea what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are up to, same with his Majesty the King- and I've forgotten the name of the current PM*. I assume if any of these folk do anything really radical- like dying or starting a war- I shall eventually find out.

As for the World Cup I only knew they were playing the final because my ex-wife texted to say she and her partner were down the pub watching it. I'm still not sure who won. Aliz says she thinks it must have been Argentina because there were riots in France- but I think this is a false assumption because fans who are celebrating are as likely to indulge in riotous behaviour as those who are calling for the ref to be shot.

* Actually this isn't entirely true but I had to think about it. Rishi Sunak ain't it? Or has someone else taken over since I last checked in?
