A Long Drive
Dec. 19th, 2022 08:05 amI suppose that if you actually live in London you relate to your own little, villagey part of it and find it cozy and characterful enough- because Highgate and Edmonton and Islington were once little villages with clear green countryside between them and still reveal their individuality to those who love them- but if you're an outsider and driving across it in the dark it seems to be one enormous, homogenous thing that goes on forever...
After London it was raining hard, and the wind was getting stronger and stronger and there was quite a stretch of our route- after Tunbridge Wells- that had to be done on haphazardly-lit country roads. It was all quite exciting.
I was thinking of calling this post "Midnight Drive"- but of course it wasn't anywhere near midnight but rather late afternoon in December- and we were home by six o'clock....
