Ailz went to a hospital appointment yesterday in her motorised wheelchair- a matter of two miles there and two miles back. The appointment was with an optometrist and they'd be messing with her eyes and it would have been inadvisable/borderline illegal to drive home in the car. We weren't sure if the wheelchair had the range, but it did, and she arrived back with some power to spare.

It rained first thing but then the sun came out and around eleven o'clock I took a cup of coffee and a mince pie out onto the patio. It was a small window of opportunity but very pleasant while it lasted. The air was still and there was real warmth in the sun. Then the clouds came bustling over the hills from Brighton.

I'm reading Plain Tales From The Hills. It's an extraordinary performance for a writer in his early twenties. The stories are tiny things- no more than anecdotes really- but packed with irony, wit, anger, poetry and pity in a volatile mix- as of gunpowder and chemicals- producing effects that are sometimes beautiful, sometimes shocking.
