I read an article about Ash Barty yesterday morning and it made her sound like a decent human being- so I was hoping she'd win the Women's Final- which she duly did. Perhaps if I'd have read an article about Katerina Plishkova I'd have tended the other way.

I'm not sure who I'll be rooting for in the men's finals. I have never warmed to Djokovic, but it will be kind of impressive if he wins his 20th major and gets to join Federer and Nadal at that dizzy height. On the other hand it would nice if one of the younger generation could break through- and Berrettini is very personable. Unless something happens between now and then to hook me into one camp or the other I shall be watching from a position of engaged neutrality. Incidentally, Boris Becker says Djokovic is a lovely guy off the tennis court- funny, kind, charming...

This afternoon- or is it this evening?- there's a football match that lots and lots of English people are very excited about. I'm hoping the home team wins if only because I'd rather not have to deal with the cloud of gloom that will descend on the collective if it doesn't.

I slipped up in my last post. I wrote "British" when I should have written "English". People of my generation- including plenty of Scots and Welsh people- grew up using the two terms interchangeably. This is an explanation not an excuse. I have now corrected the mistake, but thought it would be weaselly to do so silently...
