Out Of Our League
Jun. 30th, 2021 10:11 amArundel is about as far as we can travel from home in a day and not have to spend a prohibitive amount of time on the road. We did a circuit, hitting the valley of the Arun at Storrington, taking in a church or two, eating lunch in Littlehampton, sitting in a queue on the A259 (as one always does) and returning home via East Grinstead.
It was a dull cloudy day. I didn't take many pictures.
We were looking for places where- when the time comes- we might go house-hunting, but the Arun Valley is where rich people go to die- so out of our league- and Littlehampton is still expensive but really rather down in the mouth- and the A259 is a nightmare. Besides which, if the direst predictions are true, the whole area will be under water by 2050....
The second place we visited was Amberley. It has a castle- once a residence of the archbishops of Canterbury and now a hotel, lots of thatch and a church with a Romanesque chancel arch,

some faded medieval wall paintings

And this touching memorial by the infamous Eric Gill
