Odi sent us some papers to sign. We sent them back a week ago and they still haven't arrived. She sent us duplicates- registered mail- and we haven't received them.

Ailz rang our local Post Office to ask if they knew what was going on and they told her that, thanks to CV19, the Liverpool sorting office is operating with a skeleton staff.

As it turns out we found the business we were trying to transact can be done equally well online.

(I love that phrase "skeleton staff"- and the way it unfailingly conjures up images appropriate to the Halloween season.)

I put Nicholas Nickleby back on the shelf with the feeling that I've come to the end a long journey. In parts it was a fascinating journey, in other parts rather tedious, but take it all in all it was not just a way of passing the time but a proper lived experience that has given me memories I won't easily shake- and how many books do that?

I am currently reading Susanna Clarke's Piranesi. When I've finished it- which will probably be later today because it's a short book- I'll be setting out on the journey that is The Old Curiosity Shop.
