We live about a mile outside Matfield- and because the road between here and there is fast and twisty (my Dad used to roar down it like he was Lewis Hamilton) and there aren't any footpaths I can't say we particularly identify with it. But it's very pretty.

It's not an old village. Brenchley is the old village- and Matfield developed around a big house which was built in 1728 within walking distance of Brenchley by a yeoman farmer who was working his way up the social scale. Matfield is largely residential, with three pubs, a butcher's shop, a large village green- on which the poet Siegfried Sassoon played cricket- and a big pond.

This is the pond.
