We went to the movies for the first time in a year.

We saw Widows: All about a bunch of people I didn't believe in being beastly to one another. Well made. Exciting enough. But only radical for Hollywood. Lynda La Plante originated the story- and had her ethnically diverse, all female gang go up against the system- on BBC TV in the 80s.

When did I last see a movie that astonished me?

Colin Farrell plays a crooked Irish-American politician with a streak not exactly of conscience but of longing for something better. His comeuppance (spoiler) is to get elected to the job he wishes he could walk away from. His dad, poisonously played by Robert Duvall, asks him if he wants to be a Kennedy. Now there's an idea. Someone should cast Farrell as JFK or RFK before he gets to be too old for the gig. It'd be dream casting. He has the Irishness, he has the eyes.

The pizza joint on the first floor of the cinema- which had one wall that was all window and another that was all glass- and a screen over the bar where they had silent comedies playing on a loop- has shut down- so we went to Frankie and Benny's instead.

I dreamed I was having to move from the West Country to Kent (not something I've actually had to do in this lifetime) and I wasn't sure how I'd transport all my books. I was also worried about locking up my bicycle; I had locks and I had keys but none of them seemed to make up a pair.

But then it occurred to me that I had a whole long weekend before I needed to move- and no responsibilities- and I could go off and enjoy myself. I fancied a trip to the north coast of Devon- only a short distance away- with its vibrant Scandanavian culture...
