"Her name wouldn't be Lily, would it?" asked Julia when I told her about the couple who came looking at the house the day before yesterday.

Indeed it was.

This is the country and everybody knows everybody else- except that we don't know anybody because we're incomers and live at the end of a long drive. Lily keeps horses in a field belonging to a neighbour of Julia's- so there we go...

It's nice to have some background on the visitors. It did cross our minds- after they'd gone- that they might have been bad guys casing the joint. Not very likely but we did take them very much on trust, not asking for ID or anything...

Julia was working in a pond yesterday with Matthew and the gang- extracting a fallen and long-embedded oak tree. She was telling us about the house the pond belongs to- which is timber-framed and entirely without markers of modernity- "Not even a plastic bucket outside the back door. It wouldn't have seemed odd if Shakespeare had come out through it."The owner is a journalist on a broadsheet newspaper and a lover of all things old. She has an orchard of ancient cherry trees she won't allow to be grubbed up which formed the backdrop to the things that were going on in the pond. Julia has promised us photos....
