I've never been much of a one for cars. I mostly can't tell one model from another- and I never learned to drive. However- when I was 10 or 11 or thereabouts I went through a period when I splashed out my pocket money on a collection of Matchbox "Models of Yesteryear". I couldn't tell you why exactly. Except that I've always liked miniatures and I've always liked things that are old and quaint.
Anyway I lost sight of them. I left home and abandoned them- with all my toys- to my parents' tender mercies- and assumed they'd ended up in the bin or in a jumble sale. But not so. My sister was having a clear-out last week and found them- mixed in with some things of hers- in a shoe box.
It's like getting a little bit of my childhood back.
The cars in the picture are a 4 1/2 litre Bentley in British racing green from 1929 and a Type 35 Bugatti from 1925.
