My mother threw a cup of tea over herself yesterday and we had to change the whole bed. We washed the duvet this morning and the foam seeped out of every crack of the washing machine and piled up on the floor.

She was grumpy this morning and didn't want to get out of bed for the carers- who had arrived earlier than usual.

My mother: "Can't I have a cup of tea first?"

Me: "No, these ladies have other jobs to go to and can't wait around watching you drink."

How odd to be parenting a parent. Or perhaps not so odd- because there's nothing unusual about it. It's how things go. Unexpected would be the better word. Parents are figures of power and authority, who demand a degree of deference- and get it- even when we grow to be bigger than them- but then- if they live long enough- slowly turn into babies .

Hot Cross Buns are in the shops- and being pushed at the shopper- because it's nearly Easter, innit.

We bought a packet, of course.
