Late Delivery

It's after dark. There's a squiggle of light across the lawn- meaning someone approaching the house with a torch- then a knock on the door. I've seen this deliveryman before; he walks with crutches and is so doggy-eyed and apologetic that I want to clap him on the shoulder and inform him that he's a man and a brother.

The package he gives me contains socks.
