A little speech from the Duke of Cambridge, a couple of well-worn Anglican hymns, a poem glorifying death in war, the Lord's Prayer, a national anthem or two, a chorus of "We'll meet again": it all seemed pitifully inadequate.  But how do you commemorate an event as tremendous and horrible as "D" Day? I don't have any suggestions. It's a truism that we Brits are good at ceremonial- and perhaps we were once upon a time-  but actually we're not- not on this showing, anyway. All that Church and State seem to have left in their locker is a manky old dog whistle...
