Not so much a whodunnit as a wotthehellhaveIdun. Tony Webster, our narrator, has lived a typically placid, boring, late 20th century, middle-class life.  There was however this one episode- back in his student days- that disrupted the flow- his memory of which is partial and self serving.

A compelling story, but it would have been finished by the half way point if one of the characters- instead of stringing Tony along- had done the more plausible thing and given him an earful.

Ah, so that's why they dug up that old, old story about Harriet Harman and PIE! It's because one of Cameron's friends- and key advisers- had been arrested on suspicion of paedophile offences and the Tories wanted us all to be looking in the other direction when the news slipped out.
