Walk through the centre of Manchester and you'd hardly guess it had recently been the scene of world shattering riots. There's the one shop that got burned out and another that still has boards on its windows (though it's open for business)  and that's about all there is to see.  I can't help thinking the powers-that-be have been hyping the mayhem for reasons of their own.  Broken Britain? More like Slightly Dented.

On the way home we called in at a second-hand furniture warehouse in Failsworth.  It was very extensive and the furniture was stacked two or three pieces high, with narrow, perilous paths winding through the cliffs and crags. We came away with a pretty little gateleg table and a stool.

I polished up the new table this morning. Lord Sheraton's beeswax balsam is lovely stuff.

This afternoon we baked cakes.

This evening I'm back in the body warmer. I'm back in the fingerless gloves.
