This is Oldham on the afternoon of Christmas Eve 2005. Can spring be far behind? Actually, yes- very far behind, but if winter is as blithe and sunny as this, who cares?

I made the 2nd photo the wallpaper on my computer--it looks surreal.

Well, well, well. I'm highly flattered.

What you're looking at is a view of Alexandra Park, taken from the bridge across the bigger of the two lakes.

You've been my wallpaper quite a few times--you take some photographs that are sublime, this being one of them.

You're very kind. Thank you.

Why surreal? It looks like England in December to me, but I may only have come over in really warm times.

I think it's the composition--it looks like a painting, like something that would never occur in nature.

I'm pretty much the opposite of an anglophile, so I don't have a lot of familiarity with what England looks like, but, yes, I do think there is often something very English about Tony's photos. I don't know exactly what it is, if it's the light or the scenery. (Sometimes it's definitely the scenery.) And of course, I know where he is, which probably influences me.

Well, that's true -- but things like this occur in parks with some regularity (especially in England). It reminds me, for no good reason except for its lawn sloping to water, of the municipal park in Tewkesbury, across from the Abbey.

You have a lot of context that I don't--I have never been to England, and probably never will. I've made no effort to learn what it looks like.
